After this I'm heading out on my barefootin quest for marathon transcendence. I decided to take the Glycerins for a 26.2 mile spin in the sweltering 96 degree heat and almost 100% humidity. I'm not sure if it was the millionth cup of water that I dumped on my head or my own sweat that resulted in my soaking through my beloved pink iPod shuffle at mile 10. It fizzled out and I remained in denial for another mile until I came across my race crew (i.e. Mom and Dad, the only people brave enough to withstand the heat to see me finish) and threw it at them as I passed by. I ran the rest of the race sans headphones, and found that Dr. Sarno's introspective strategies (see blog entry below) were quite effective when it came to managing the pain, discomfort, and high, humid heat. I managed to finish fourth in my age group and am looking forward to embracing my Vibram Five Fingers as my new marathon training partners.
